In 2015, a small number of BI WORLDWIDE Associates from the Events management team created a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.
Where it began...
After many months of research, we selected a project in Durban, South Africa, called Girls and Boys Town. Shortly after this decision, three of our pioneering ‘scouts’ took a short inspection trip to Durban supported by British Airways to meet face to face with the team to establish where we could help - from this, the CARE project was born.
CARE (Compassion, Awareness, Respect and Education) encapsulates the spirit of our committed Associates to make a difference in one of the destinations we travel to frequently with conference and incentive travel groups from around the world.
More about Girls and Boys Town
1958 saw the first residential home established in Durban, initially providing a home for nine youngsters; soon nine became 26 and today, Girls and Boys Town provides a safe home, food and support for 42 girls and boys, aged between 11 and 18.
Many of these children experience considerable educational struggles and are in desperate need of additional help. The £3.50 we often spend on a coffee would provide half an hour of one-to-one specialist tutoring for a child. With the simple investment of time, opportunities are limitless – knowledge, empowerment and a sense of worth.
With this in mind, BI WORLDWIDE committed to raising £5,000 to provide additional tutoring for the children of Girls and Boys Town over the coming year. The money raised will be donated to the children in the communal home to pay for this desperately needed tuition to enable them to make the most of their education. For these children, extra-curricular tutoring with their homework is a rarity and an honour which instils a sense of worth, pride and hope for their futures.
Our wonderful partners
We asked our business partners to donate merchandise or experiences, which we would raffle or auction among BI WORLDWIDE Associates on a regular basis. The response was overwhelming from our business partners with 32 lots, big and small, received. We started the bidding process six weeks ago and wanted to ensure that the items auctioned were within reach of every BI WORLDWIDE Associate from a bottle of chocolate vodka to a luxury mini-break in Paris. We have been simply delighted with the enthusiasm of all concerned. In order to make the target a little more achievable, Mike Davies, Managing Director of BI WORLDWIDE agreed to gift match the funds raised by BI WORLDWIDE Associates.
In this very short period of time, we have managed to raise over £3,000, achieving a massive 64% of our target which we had set ourselves for the next 12 months!
Next week we travel to South Africa again and are proud to be able to hand over our first contribution to Girls and Boys Town on behalf of all of our loyal business partners and our Associates at BI WORLDWIDE. In addition, we’ve been busy donating pens, pencils, rulers, notebooks for their exams as well as T-shirts, towels and baseball caps for their sports activities to help a little more.
Thank you for caring!
