Our favourite Christmas cocktail will provide much liquid merriment.
It's that time of the year when hours spent rambling the streets of Chiado and Príncipe Real in Lisbon buying last-minute Christmas gifts can leave one feeling a lot like the grumpy Grinch. It's at this particular point that only a hot, alcoholic drink at the Ritz Bar will do - and boozy rich hot chocolate is the ultimate indulgence. Comforting, delicious and warm.
So this holiday season, if by a stroke of bad luck one is not in Lisbon, invite a group of friends and get mixing at home. As a special treat, Mendes shares his Christmas Hug in a Mug recipe.
Makes 1 serving
1.5 oz Frangelico noisette liqueur
1.5 oz Kahlua coffee liqueur
1 oz Martell cognac
For the hot chocolate
1/4 cup ChocoRITZ chocolate 76% Cacao (or to taste)
1 cup milk (or to taste)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Salt (to taste)
Whipped cream (to taste)
Pour the Frangelico noisette liqueur, Kahlua coffee liqueur and Martell cognac into a glass mug.
Make the hot chocolate: Heat 1 cup milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until it starts to steam and bubbles appear around the edge of the saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of ChocoRITZ chocolate and continue to heat, whisking constantly, until simmering, 2 to 3 minutes longer.
Pour the hot chocolate into the mug with some vanilla extract and top with light and fluffy whipped cream. Crumble 2 nuts into bits and sprinkle on top.
