People, process and technology... we're prepared for GDPR!

With GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) fast approaching, BI WORLDWIDE is taking all the right actions to ensure the business is compliant and ready for the new regulations coming into force 25th May 2018.

When a new regulation is put into place, it offers many businesses the opportunity to improve and review existing processes.  At BIW we are already committed to compliance and take this very seriously to ensure we are a secure and trustworthy agency for all of our clients, suppliers and Associates.

The handling of all internal and client personal data has always been extremely important to us. As a result, we are proud of our ISO27001 and ISO9001 accreditations, which we have held for many years.

When a regulation such as GDPR comes along, we put our focus into three key aspects when handling any major change to the business: people, process and technology. These are vital for the correct handling of data and we also understand that having our people on board is equally important. By doing so, our Associates are trained to ensure they understand their responsibility to personal data.

In following with GDPR, we have appointed Mary Lusher as our Compliance and Data Protection Manager to champion all internal GDPR and data governance. To embrace this approach, we have provided mini desk calendars which provide essential information to keep the company compliant, alongside sending out regular communications to all Associates to keep them up to date with any changes that may impact them on their working processes.

"Many people in the business community refer to GDPR as a challenge but I prefer to think of it as a great opportunity to improve process, transparency, and accountability which can only be a good thing."

Data breaches are a challenge for companies across the globe, as seen in the news in recent months. GDPR is an EU regulation being adopted as the new Data Protection Bill in the UK after Brexit. It protects the personal data of all EU citizens by relating to our new digital world. Being a global company, we are working closely with all regions to encourage a continued improvement for data protection and data governance, ensuring all data will be subject to the same high standards regardless of whether it sits in the EU or not. This applies both internally and to the clients and suppliers we work with.

Simply put, we feel it’s an on-going journey and commitment to continually improve how we handle data, rather than a race to 25th May.
