Whether you love it or loathe it, Valentine's Day is upon us.
For those lucky in love who are looking for a more extravagant gesture than the traditional flowers, chocolates and card, we have found 10 of the, LITERALLY, most romantic places on earth (and beyond). And for those not so lucky in the romance department, here are 10 destinations that you really want to avoid!
Okay, so probably not top on the list of your next must see destinations, good news for those single people out there, this one is pretty easy to avoid. Bad news for the unloved but great news for the love birds out there, Virgin Galactic are working furiously to get their first space flights up and running, in fact they have just showcased the design of the pilot’s outfits…almost there then!
9. X CANYON, ARIZONA, USA
Perfect for the hiking enthusiasts out there, you really need to make an effort to find this heart shape that has been eroded into the sandstone along the canyon walls. So love birds, take a hike! Everyone else, pop the kettle on and let’s see what’s on TV.
8. AKUMAL, RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO
For the single scuba divers out there it is unlikely that you are planning your next dive anywhere near the Riviera Maya, thanks to all the weddings and honeymoons that are occurring on a daily basis. For those of you already in the Riviera Maya having just married, why not treat your loved one to an extra romantic underwater treat.
7. ISLA CORAZÓN (HEART ISLAND), PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA
Planning your next kayaking adventure? If you want to spend your time paddling around a large heart shaped island then Mascardi Lake is the place to go.
6. GREAT BARRIER REEF, AUSTRALIA
To be fair, in the water, or on the water you are unlikely to notice this little gem, so you may need to splash out further for a helicopter or sea plane from the Whitsundays to fly you overhead so you and your significant other can take a pause from staring into each other’s eyes and stare out the window instead.
5. ALGARVE, PORTUGAL
Hmmm, starting to get a little trickier, what with the Algarve being one of the most popular summer destinations, certainly within Europe. For the romantically challenged stick to the towns and inland parks, avoid the coast at all costs! Everyone else, get yourself a boat and start cruising through the tunnels of love.
4. GALESNJAK ISLAND, CROATIA
This tiny island in the Adriatic has caused quite a stir. It is small, uninhabited, has no natural attractions, is just sand and shrubs, and yet it is one of the most popular islands on the planet right now. Why? It is the most heart-shaped island on the planet. It has now been christened the “Isle of Love”, “Lovers’ Island” and “Love Island” among others, single people, need we say more.
3. LAC CALVARESC, SWITZERLAND
Another little challenge for the romantically minded, Lac Calvaresc (lake of heart), sits about 7,000 feet up on a legendary hiking trail in the Swiss Alps. Not easy to get to but perfect for a refreshing dip in summer (or winter after all that hiking!).
2. MAUI, HAWAII
Not only is this hole naturally heart shaped but it has been formed in red lava on Nakalele point. Can you possibly get any more romantic than Hawaii and red hearts! Reasonably easy to get to (once you get to Maui), you and your soul mate can enjoy this one from the top of the cliffs with no need to get fitted for harnesses and start repelling. If you do want to get more up close and personal for a photo, it is a fairly easy trek down from the top.
1. ANY BODY OF WATER, UK
Yes, for those of you not in love with love, it is generally best to avoid any pond, stream, river or lake in the UK. No matter the weather or the time of year these infamous love birds can be found cooing (or hissing) at each other, their graceful necks forming a perfect heart. Certainly one of the least expensive options for a naturally romantic moment with your special someone. For everyone without a special someone, carry breadcrumbs at all times, it is amazing how quickly couples can fall out over food!
