Girls and Boys Town is a very important charity to BI WORLDWIDE and the money raised so far has had an incredible impact on the children's education, with many glowing school reports!
Where it began...
A group of BI WORLDWIDE Associates began researching charities for the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, selecting a non-profit organisation called Girls and Boys Town which is based in Durban, South Africa. This charity provides a safe home, food, education and support for 42 children aged between 11 and 18.
Supported by one of BI WORLDWIDE’s business partners, British Airways, the group travelled to Durban to meet the Girls and Boys Town and find out more about how they support the children. From this; the ‘CARE’ project was born. CARE stands for Compassion, Awareness, Respect and Education and encapsulates the spirit of BI WORLDWIDE’s committed Associates to make a difference in one particular destination where many conference and incentive travel groups from around the world travel to.
More about Girls and Boys Town
Girls and Boys Town was first established in 1958 and focuses on helping children who have been orphaned, abandoned, abused or rejected by their families. Many of the children arrive vulnerable with shattered dreams and broken hearts. Girls and Boys Town focuses on giving these children the support they require as well as the opportunity for a bright future.
Many of the children experience considerable educational struggles and are in desperate need of additional help. The £3.50 that is often spent on a coffee or sandwich provides half an hour of one-to-one specialist tutoring for a child. With the simple investment of time, opportunities are limitless – knowledge, empowerment and a sense of worth.
With this in mind, BI WORLDWIDE decided to set a target and commit to raising £5,000 providing additional tutoring for the children of Girls and Boys Town. For these children, extra-curricular tutoring with their homework is a rarity and an honour which instils a sense of worth, pride and hope for their futures. The extra tutoring will help improve grades, behavioural difficulties and provide motivational counselling for the children.
Thank you to our wonderful partners
Since the project launched, the Events team has asked many business partners to donate any merchandise or experiences, which could then be used to raise money through raffles and auctions. The response has been overwhelming and many prizes have been successfully raffled or auctioned off, raising far more money than the value of the prizes themselves.
BI WORLDWIDE’s Head of Events Shaun Casey comments: “We have always worked strategically with our business partners all over the world. We are absolutely delighted how they have engaged and embraced this initiative to support such a deserving cause. We are very fortunate to work with such industry professionals and it is very heart-warming to see how so many of our business partners are so compassionate about the plight of these youngsters.”
