Take me to Catalunya

BI WORLDWIDE's Events Design Manager, Michelle Power, attended an educational event to Catalunya, Spain. We ask Michelle to share the highlights of her trip with us.

Bringing back memories

Costa Brava was my first holiday destination without ‘the parents’ so when I was invited to attend a Catalunya familiarisation trip I thought about 19 years ago when I descended on the British infested Lloret de Mar with its ugly holiday resorts, busy touristic streets and drinking sangria on the beach – classy!

Armed with hand luggage and a little duty free, myself and four other event agency representatives hosted by JG Collection and events by TLC, boarded a short BA flight from London Heathrow to Barcelona airport. From there we were quickly transferred 25 minutes out of the city to two gorgeous wineries and were handed our first glass of Cava. From that moment on I realised I had some serious misconceptions about the Catalonia area.

World-class accommodation

The Hotel Camiral (which opened in July) on the world-renowned PGA Catalunya Resort was to be our home for the next two nights and it certainly exceeded expectations. Set amongst two world-class golf courses, The Hotel Camiral offers five-star service in a truly world-class destination. Being a recently refurbished hotel (a Melia in its previous life), it challenges space with an impressive library positioned at its centre and pockets of space for any social gathering. Each of the 149 rooms is bright, spacious and overlooks the pool or golf course. It was very easy to see this hotel will soon become hard to get availability for and they have so much more to offer in the future.

Exquisite local cuisine surrounded by medieval delights and gothic architecture.

Girona - A must for Game of Thrones fans

It would have been rude not to visit the city of Girona whilst nearby, so we embarked on a culinary tour along the cobbled streets stopping only to savour the local tapas and of course the Cava. The city is a must for Games of Thrones fans as scenes were set in the beautiful city, but also for those who truly appreciate exquisite local cuisine surrounded by medieval delights and gothic architecture. Our final stop in the city was at Rocambolesc – possibly the world’s best ice cream created by the local and world renowned Roca brothers.

The following day we visited The El Celler de Can Roca, voted the World’s Best Restaurant in 2013 and 2015. The brothers stay true to their routes and opt for a simplistic design so guests focus only on their culinary experience. The kitchen was full of their 35 hardworking and dedicated staff, whilst the wine cellar would make any wine connoisseur full of envy. It was exquisite and took you on a journey of the hand selected regions in which the wine is chosen. With the restaurant opening its bookings a year in advance (and being fully booked within minutes), the Espai Mas Marroch offers an unforgettable and unique event space just 10 minutes’ drive from the restaurant. Previously the home of the brothers’ restaurant, it is a more viable option for groups.

A spectacular trip

The trip got better with a personally cooked lunch by Jordi Jacas at the Ruines d’Empuries (an archaeological UNESCO world Heritage site), which was simply unforgettable, a flight over the Costa Brava coastline in a two seated micro-plane, a tour of the Formula 1 Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya and a VIP shopping experience at La Roca Village.

There is so much to do, see, eat, drink and experience in and around Girona, Costa Brava really does have something to offer everyone, including a high end incentive group. It is well and truly on my radar, replacing those young 19 years old memories with experiential world-class beauty. Thank you JG Collection and events by TLC for putting it there!
